As the transition progresses, the gaps between periods stretch out. The marker of late perimenopause is going 60 days or more without a period. At this stage, the ovaries are winding down more noticeably, and periods become both less frequent and less predictable.
This late stage typically lasts somewhere between one and three years. It is the home stretch before the final menstrual period, though there is no way to know in advance exactly how long it will run. Some women move through it quickly; for others it lasts the full three years or feels like it stretches longer.
After Menopause: The First Years Postmenopause
Once 12 months have passed with no period, you have reached menopause and entered postmenopause. The STRAW+10 framework describes an early postmenopausal window that spans roughly five to eight years, during which the body continues to settle into its new hormonal baseline. Put those numbers together and a picture emerges: a woman might start noticing cycle changes in her mid-40s, move through several years of increasingly irregular periods, reach her final period around age 51, and then spend several more years settling into postmenopause. Every part of that range is normal. The wide variation is not a defect in the process; it is the process.
